Are you a human healthcare worker in an airborne virus pandemic or an Elven commander in Middle-Earth trying to convince everyone that Sauron’s still a threat?

(A list in the satirical style of McSweeney’s Internet Tendency)

  1. Everyone around you has stopped believing something dangerous is out there because they can’t see it with the naked eye.
  2. You’ve seen people die from it, and your life will never be the same, but those who haven’t lost someone don’t see the big deal and want to “return to normal.”
  3. You’ve made it your mission to help all people anyway because it’s the right thing to do, but some people only hate you more for your dedication to your job.
  4. You watch some people decide to “learn to live with it,” only to die or, if they survive, become crippled.
  5. Many of your co-workers are burning out and giving up, or even joining the other side.
  6. Your leaders and politicians gaslight you when you show them the evidence that it’s not over.
  7. Some people mistake you for the evil you fight against and put the target on your back.
  8. Your world will never be the same, but others refuse to see it, clinging to the past as if that can stop what’s coming.
  9. Sometimes you cannot know light until you touch the darkness.
  10. Hope is never mere, even when it is meager.
