Oncology nurses: 20 things I am thankful to you for as an oncologist

Last updated on March 16, 2019

In appreciation of oncology nurses everywhere.

In recognition of National Nurses Week:

Thank you to oncology nurses for:

  1. staying behind in the room with patients and families after we deliver difficult news,
  2. not letting us shirk the tough questions,
  3. professionalism in the most difficult of circumstances,
  4. being partners in care,
  5. remembering what size gloves we wear,
  6. the phrase, “Doctor, I think you meant to order …”,
  7. making sure we eat,
  8. triaging phone calls,
  9. listening,
  10. telling us what the patient is really worried about but too afraid to ask,
  11. a calming presence,
  12. working 12-hour shifts,
  13. working over-time,
  14. knowing when to page and when it is ok to hold off at 3:00 AM,
  15. rapid response teams,
  16. knowing when it’s time for hospice,
  17. patient safety,
  18. reminding us to go home and see our families,
  19. team safety,
  20. caring hearts.
